I've taught in a myriad of environments. My earliest goes back to instructing marching band/indoor percussion programs. My most recent marching program was Fusion Drum Bugle Corps. My college studies helped me branch out musically, and thus I started dabbling in private instruction which I found very fulfilling. My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum.  I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes.  Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged.  Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal.  As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. I find it is very easy for people to get into a rut and/or get bored with music and I have some very specific approaches designed to mitigate this. I use what some have called the target approach. With this method you are working on one concept at a time, and you should always have one concept in mind while you practice. Some examples of beginning concepts are 1) keeping a steady beat, 2) sound quality, or 3) smooth finger technique. In one practice session using the target approach you may spend 10 minutes on target 1) and 15 minutes on target 2). What is important, however, is that you continue to work on a target every day until you find yourself performing that single concept flawlessly and effortlessly. Read More

I will do whatever it takes to teach the student whatever they are willing to learn. If they want to learn a specific genre on an instrument that has never been used for that genre, I will be happy to teach them. For example, I can play trap music on a piano, but I could also play death metal on a piano as well. The student should enjoy practicing.  It is my job to create a lesson plan that allows a student to progress steadily, without straining the limits of their abilities.
