The way that I do this is by placing an emphasis on music the student enjoys, and by giving the student a fair amount of autonomy in choosing their repertoire they would like to learn. That is why my approach is focused on jamming. After the student can understand how to make the instrument sound, I immediately give them the oppertunity to put their skills into practice.
