i start beginning guitarists out with Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book One, because even if a player is not destined to rely on traditional notation, they still need to know the names of the notes, so they can communicate with others. I approach ukulele somewhat less formally, because chords can be played right off the bat--singing is encouraged. For bass students, ensemble is stressed from the get-go--bass is inherently a goup affair. Read More

It is very excited working with someone who is enthusiastic about music making. One way to achieve this kind of enthusiasm, and really cultivate a sense of joy in a musician’s playing, is to set specific and attainable goals for a student’s technique and musicianship. As a teacher, I demonstrate this enthusiasm and focus as much as possible during the lesson, with the hopes that the student will keep it going during the week and build upon it for the next lesson! Watching a student develop their playing is an incredibly gratifying experience for me as a teacher. To help encourage this,I put a great effort into connecting with the student's interests from day one. With each lesson, I work with them to set goals that are within their reach, while maintaining a relaxed, self-paced learning environment that is both fun and comfortable. My teaching style incorporates both traditional, and non-traditional techniques, all customized to meet each person's own unique needs. Read More

First and foremost, I love the performance and the expressive aspects of music, and I transmit this enthusiasm to my students. I also adapt my teaching to each individual, allowing the student to make an emotional connection to what they are learning and to apply that emotionality back into their playing. Understanding what the student wants and is interested in is the utmost priority in my teachings. I am supportive and positive at the same time that I present surmountable challenges that motivate students to do their best. Read More

If the student does not reach his/her goal and they put in genuine effort and most importantly, heart, then undoubtedly they have gained from it and I am never one to harshly criticize a student. If I think they can do better I will tell them how, but for me, music is made primarily for enjoyment and self improvement and not for the approval of others or to be better than others. Read More

My teaching method depends on what the student wants to learn, if they prefer to start learning songs first that is fine but I will still make sure to cover basic music principles in early lessons and incorporate them into the lessons. I need and expect my students to practice at least 15 minutes of per day, more if possible. This will enable me to not have to review previous lessons too much and we can move through more material quicker. Read More
