I have been playing music for over 15 years and have earned two degrees in music (University of Colorado, Manhattan School of Music). Some of my teachers include the world class Orin O'Brien and Tim Cobb from the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Orchestra. In my undergrad I was a finalist for the annual concerto competition and have I performed internationally in Canada as well as Japan. I use guitar tablature as the main method for music reading. I've found its the simplest and quickest way to get the student playing melodies and songs on the first day. After a quick crash course in how to read tablature, we shift into how reading it will translate to playing so that the student gains the practical application of tablature. With kids, starting off with nursery rhyme melodies is the easiest way to have them recognize melodies they are playing themselves. Read More

As lessons progress another part of my teaching method is to teach students something they can be proud of. For younger students that might be a nursery rhyme they know all the words to and feel like they can perform for their parents, for older students it might be a song they love and hear on the radio and always wanted to learn how to play. By doing this early on I hope to show students that with their hard work they can make music they're proud of and show them the benefits of practicing and reaching goals. Read More

Sharing the joy of music is what it's all about, but at the same time, everyone is different, so it's vital to nurture and encourage each student's natural abilities and inclinations, while showing them the way to new and wonderful worlds, and skills they didn't know they could master.
