i always love to see my students reach a goals on the lessons and i don't believe in "i can't do it", if you can dream it, you can see it, and if you can see it you can do it!. i always believe that the everybody can play an instrument if you say that is not for you, that is just a sign that you just need more practice that other people , i already teach a kid to play violin and also a grandma to sing and play guitar at the same time i think everything is posible you jus need practice over and over again until you make it. That being said, there are students that don't want to learn to read and I understand that as well. For those students there are many methods available that can help them achieve what they want. For beginning students I like to focus attention on fundamental technique on both hands, making sure that they use the correct finger positioning on the bass. As they advance, the student will begin to know the whole fretboard through scales and arpeggios (in all keys) so the student knows where all the notes are in the instrument. For intermediate to advanced students I recommend books like "Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony" by Bert Ligon, "Fingerboard Harmony for Bass" by Gary Willis, "Funk Bass Fills" by Anthony Vitti, "The Latin Bass Book" by Oscar Stagnaro and "The Essential Jaco Pastorius" by Jaco Pastorius.
