My name is Daniel Erdahl or as kids often call me, Mr. Dan. I have been playing and studying music for nearly 30 years, and teaching for 20. I play and teach many, many styles. I started playing rock and blues as a kid, later becoming very focused on classical guitar. Over the years I have picked up several other instruments including ukulele, mandolin, banjo, drums, bass, vocals, and piano. I decided in 2006 that I wanted to be a full-time professional music teacher, and developed a studio of 60 students a week. Read More

I've been teaching in the NYC area for the past 5+ years and during that time I've developed my pedagogy as well as my playing. I always am sure to point out the simple rule. During our lesson I am showing you how to play, the real work is done on their own time. I tell them that 15 minutes every day is better than an hour 1 day a week. Playing every day ensures that the material is always fresh in their head and they don't lose interest. Read More

I’m appreciative that they take the time to reach out to me instead of coming to the next lesson unprepared. I do encourage the importance of learning standard music notation because I believe that it helps understand the big picture of music. I believe that not knowing how to read standard music notation is akin to speaking a language but not being able to read or write it. I do respect that everyone has a different reason to want to play and I do not force people to learn what they do not want to. Read More

A hybrid of traditional notation, playing by ear, basic right and left hand technique followed by custom lesson plans based on individual students' interests and artistic direction. My style is generally as relaxed or as focused as the student is ready for. Meaning that if the student is able to practice an hour or more a day that will lead to a more focused atmosphere, and if there's less time to practice then we adjust accordingly. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For my more advanced students, I work with them on musical concepts to develop strong practice habits and scheduling. Read More

Teaching style is derived from my own techniques proven to develop the style and success needed to achieve. No method books or corny techniques are utilized. We don't use boring teaching method books, but formulate a concise direct approach to artistry. We will learn songs and style that the student will chose, then, incorporate all aspects of theory, scales, progressions as will as pedagogy to enhance not only the playing level of a student, but, a total and thorough understanding of music that will allow the student to progress to a professional level.
