For beginners, I put a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of music, such as getting to know the staff, time signatures, how to construct a major scale, etc. I will also introduce the student to intervals, which are the basic building blocks of western music. The student will also begin basic ear training, by learning to recognize certain intervals by ear, and also learning to sing and play on their instrument when given a reference pitch. Read More

For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. In developing a complete musician, I want to offer support for my students' other musical activities, as well as provide them with resources that they might not have elsewhere. Read More

I am a fun-loving, passionate instructor who loves watching students experience the satisfaction of making progress and feeling accomplished. I have toured all over the U.S. performing with many great musicians such as Alasdair Fraser, Hanneke Cassel, Mari Black, and many others. I'm both proud and fortunate to have been featured numerous times on WGBH for "A Celtic Sojourn" with Brian O'Donovan. A regular night for me consists purely of doing what I love: playing music with friends at local bars or my own living room. Read More

I was studying Electrical Engineering for two years at Tufts University before I decided to take a leap and follow my passion of music. It has been an incredible journey ever since! I have had the oppurtunity to play a wide variety of musical styles including rock jam-band, folk trio, jazz ensembles, latin jazz, chamber music, solo, duo, avante-garde, electronic, and many more. No matter what the situation, I always love to play, create, and share music with others. Read More

For beginning students, I use the Hal Leonard Basic or Kids Guitar Method because it is such a good introduction to the instrument. For bass and ukulele I also use the beginner Hal Leonard Method books. For more advanced students, I first get a sense for what they want to learn and where they want to go, by asking them some questions about their previous education, what songs they like to listen to, and any problems with practicing or grasping the material, that they may have experienced. My lessons are very structured, but within the structure is a lot of freedom. An hour long lesson might look something like this: First 10 min.: Warm-ups, discussion about posture, hand position and muscular/skeletal health while playing. Next 10 min.: Performance of previous weeks assignments, with discussion about whether preparation was adequate, what was missed (usually dynamics and other articulations) and what could be done to improve. Next 10 min.: Based half on performance and half on my own ideas, work on a number of techniques to strengthen the weaknesses the student is facing. Read More

Through my time working with students I have found that it is very important to get to know them on a more personal level, i.e. music they like, their interests, their hobbies etc, and that way I can tailor my lesson plans to them as individuals and make them feel as comfotable as possible. I've learned a lot from my experiences in and out of the classroom, and I use my knowledge to the best of my ability in every lesson. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
