I will always ask students what they're interested in learning and work that into the lesson. But the main focus for beginners is to be comfortable with the fretboard and to have fun. Books I use for teaching Piano is the Piano Adventures series of books by Nancy and Randall Faber, which is a great lesson book and a good basic piano method for beginners through intermediate level students. For guitar I use the Hal Leonard Incredible Chord Finder and the Warren Nunes Jazz guitar Rhythm and Background Chords and the Solo Patterns book. Every student starts or resumes classes at different levels. My job is to recognize that level and proceed accordingly. I like my students to be able to learn and progress at the rate they can or want to. Letting students let you know what they want to learn and at what pace, helps the student as well as the teacher in that progress.
