I have over 5 years of teaching experience working with a variety of communities and age groups internationally and locally. This has allowed me the flexibility to truly cater my teaching style to the needs of each and every student, and be culturally competent realizing that every student learns differently and has different needs. I have conducted a children's choir as well and have played music professionally for over 15 years. I also am an actress where I have acted in a variety of films and theater projects across the city. I do not have a specific teaching style. Being a teacher is a learning experience for the teacher just as much as it is for the student. Every student learns a different way and can require a unique way of teaching. No one student will get the same teaching method. Overall, I do approach each lesson with patients, the wanting for the student to succeed and making the lesson fun but also productive. Read More
Instruments: Piano Organ Keyboard
I began piano lessons at the age of 5, and organ lessons at age 10. I became the junior organist at Lagonda United Methodist Church at age 14, playing at the early service. By age 17, I became their principle organist and choir accompanist. Five years later, I also became the organist and choir director at Highlands United Church of Christ. I attended Wright State University on academic and music scholarships, and graduated, magna cum laude, in 2001, with concentration in organ, piano, and vocal. Read More

My teaching experience began while attending college and has been on and off with my performing schedule but I believe the performance has help me focused on teaching from real-world experience. I therefore dont like to spend a lot of time during lessons on topics a student may never use. This also helps the student hold interest in their lessons. I approach teaching from the students perspective, whenever possible and try to always emphasize the musical style they are most interested in. Read More

In 2009, I graduated from Capital University with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, and since graduation I've had many opportunities to play around the Columbus, OH area, performing rock, pop, and jazz music frequently. Instruments: Piano
Students want to learn the piano for a variety of reasons. Some arent really sure they want to learn at all, but mom wants them to give it a shot! Others just want to learn that song on the radio! All are fine reasons to learn, and each deserves a personal approach. For very young students just learning the basics, structure provides direction and comfort, so Id recommend jumping into a beginners curriculum such as by Alfred or Hal Leonard and going from there. Instruments: Piano Voice
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My primary instrument is the voice and has always been my first love. I absolutely love to sing and have really enjoyed helping others to learn as well. Choosing my voice as a my primary instrument never seemed like a choice to me. I've always known that I've wanted to be a singer and have enjoyed every second of it. The one thing I love about this instrument is that everyone has one! Everyone can learn to use their voice better and more effectively when making music. There are no good and bad voices. Each one is unique and special and can benefit from good technique!
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
i would have to say that time spent traveling in musical ensembles were the some of the best experiences of my life. In high school I made it into a select group that traveled to churches and events. This helped me experience different venues and also help with my confidence when performing seeing that I was always meeting new people. In college, I was able to tour with my choir to Europe and sing at some of the most beautiful and sacred places in the world. My favorite memory from that place was performing in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France. Absolutely beautiful!
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
The hardest thing to master on any instrument is discipline! Techniques and concepts can be learned, but having the focus to sit down on your own and learn is difficult for anyone. If you can learn how to focus and practice on your own, there is no skill level you cannot reach. I have seen this again and again in students. As soon as they develop this ability, you can see their skill level take off. This is super exciting to me and I love to see this growth in my students. Focus is also a great life skill that is applicable in almost every area! Teaching music = Teaching life!
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I choose to use the Faber and Faber Piano adventures books for my piano students. I really have learned to love this series. Having used several other methods books in the past, I really prefer these due to their pacing and presentation of material. With some other books, I have felt things were rushed and concepts were presented in a way that were hard to understand. Faber and Faber have always proven to be a reliable learning tool for all ages and can be used to teach students of any age or skill level. For my voice students, I use a mixture of materials based on genre, voice type and interest. I usually have them create a folder that we then fill with various materials to help them learn and grow as a singer.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Students must first find a time of the day to practice and stick with it! It should be a time were you are not rushed and have little to no distractions. Warming your hands or voice up is a great way to start your practice session. I provide techniques and warm-up activities that will help prepare you to play your instrument effectively. Once that is completed, start with the first song assigned to you that week. Look over the summary page that I give every student to make sure you know what to focus on and how to proceed. If it's a particularly challenging piece, you may want to start and practice the most difficult section first, then start back at the beginning. If you get stuck and become frustrated, sometimes it is best to walk away and start fresh the next day. This will give you time to calm down and look at it with fresh eyes.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I received a BA in Music Education from Capital University. I have always had a passion for teaching others and helping students grow in their particular skill. I use that passion now as a music teacher in a public school to help my students find their love for music. It can be difficult at times to
