As I picked up students through word-of-mouth referrals, friends, and fellow church members, I was able to take students through the rudiments of guitar, and in some cases produced some very advanced players. My teaching experience in Chelsea High School enabled me to take roughly 1800 students through basic guitar; again, some of these really caught fire and are pursuing guitar passionately through their bands. For beginners, I put a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of music, such as getting to know the staff, time signatures, how to construct a major scale, etc. I will also introduce the student to intervals, which are the basic building blocks of western music. I am a big proponent of a hands-on learning approach that relies heavily on musical interaction and performance preparation. The best way to improve as a musician is to play, so I try to pinpoint what the student is interested in playing and focus our attention toward that, all while developing foundational music skills such as rhythm, sight reading, theory, ear training, and harmony. I like to start my students on a series of warm-ups and technical exercises that I've found to be essential in developing good technique for students of all abilities and experience levels, and eventually work up to playing repertoire that will strengthen their fundamentals and fulfil their musical interests.
