From my experience, students vary greatly in musical background, personality, and needs, so I view each new student as a blank slate. My philosophy has always been to patiently build a solid foundation and not rush into advanced pieces at the risk of accumulating bad habits. At the same time, I recognize how important it is to keep learning fun, so I negotiate the balance accordingly. My program involves using Essential Elements Books, Suzuki Books/Methods, Scale Books, and Dotzauer Books.Weekly instructions include: practicing scales, skill builder exercises and concentration on individual students' solo selections. Students repertoire includes traditional music books, skills book, etudes and songs. Suzuki Essential Elements are books of choice for music. This means that I take into account the frustration that learning a new instrument can entail, and use therapeutic techniques to make sure my students are regulated during these moments of frustration. I provide structure and guidance for my students, but give them opportunities for free exploration, decision making, and leadership throughout a lesson.
