I find the Suzuki method extremely helpful for starting young students, however I also like to use other resources such as the Essential Elements book for beginners. I cater lessons to YOUR needs and goals. I am not invested in there being a "right" technique of any kind. Together we will create a custom approach so that you will love the experience of playing the music you love.  I will share fun and efficient ways to practice so that you get immediate results. If desired, I also guarantee you will be playing a blues and improvising within a maximum of 6 weeks as long as you practice at least 10 minutes, three times a week.  You will have the option of playing along with recordings minus your part so that you can experience the joy of ensemble playing early on in the safety of your own home. I love creating small ensemble groups of students at similar levels and arranging concerts at regular intervals. I have been teaching group and private lessons since 2021, and I have experience working with students of all ages and backgrounds in both virtual and in-person lesson formats. As part of my appointment as a Teaching Fellow through NEC's Community Performances Partnerships program, I am currently a Teaching Assistant at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Dorchester, MA, where I work with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade cello students on technique and music-reading, and through this fellowship and other NEC classes, I have received training in various pedagogical practices for private teaching. I center the way I teach technique around what "feels" good to a student, especially older students who have already started, to make sure that we are able to prevent and respond to injuries. So, I start with stretching and will frequently refer back to exercises that are meant to integrate physical ease into playing. Aside from that, I try to balance a consistent routine/expectation of things I want to cover (asking for things a week in advance, always playing a scale at the start of the lesson, etc), while also meeting a student where they are at on the day. For beginning students I start with the Suzuki cello books, and teach books 1 to 5. I reinforce the Suzuki with pop/ non-classical songs, depending on the student's interest. After Suzuki 5, which is well into the intermediate level, I introduce individual works (small concerto's, sonatas, etc.) and cater them towards the student's ability and interest. For younger or beginner students, I reinforce the Suzuki books with sight-reading, and as they progress, I add in etude studies.  Read More

Cellist Minjung Kang was born and raised in South Korea. At age of 7, she began her music studies in piano and won multiple awards in piano competitions by the age of 9 such as Piano competitions hosted by famous piano manufacturing companies in Korea such as Samick and Young Chang. At age of 11, she had her first piano recital at Hoam Performing Art Center as the award of the competition. She picked up her first cello at age of 11, and studied under Kuk Rok Park, one of the most famous cellists in Korea. Read More
