My musical career started as a singer growing up in Washington DC. I have been playing saxophone for almost 15 years and have been composing for 8. I have maintained a private studio for 6 years and have taught students from 8-18. I have lots of experience singing and playing in lots of different genres of music and have always maintained the importance of being able to play in multiple genres. This opportunity opened doors for me to teach music theory and private saxophone and flute lessons in a community based project that was geared towards using music for social development and change in the inner city youth. Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. Students get to learn the basics like Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns, jingle bells, and other fun tunes. For beginning students I teach out of the Rubank Elementary Method books. These books are most comprehensive for beginning students. As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult students needs and wants.
