I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. I've been a serious musician since taking up (baritone) saxophone at age 13, over 40 years ago. I first took up clarinet at 10, and later added flute, but saxophone has been my main focus over the years. I play around the Austin area in a variety of settings from big bands to musicals to rock/blues groups to studio recording to classical ensembles; pretty much whatever is asked for. I received her Bachelor of Science degree in political science and flute, graduating from the Ball State University honors college at age 20. I earned my masters degree and Ph.D in flute from New York University where I was the youngest woman to receive a Ph.D from the School of Arts and Sciences. A university professor for 12 years, I have been a faculty member of the University of New Haven where I taught flute, piano and economics in addition to teaching flute, music history and music theory at Southern Connecticut State University and South Central Community College. I traveled to California for college, where I received a Bachelor of Music Composition degree from Biola University. While in college, I continued engraving, was hired to compose music for musical plays, taught piano privately, and directed the music at my church.
