I also studied privately with Charles Banacos (increible piano and jazz teacher), Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Viola, Joe Allard ( whose Saxophone methods I teach, who was the teacher of every major saxophone player in his day including Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, and countless others ) , learned circle breathing from Rahsaan Roland Kirk, recorded 2 albums at Grammavision with Al Macdowell (Bass player for 40 years with Ornette Coleman). recodered and learned as much as I could grasp from Don Cherry and Ornette. In the past four years at Northwestern University, I consistently taught music to students in their homes privately. For beginning and intermediate students I like to teach out of the Rubank Method books. They have pieces that focus on one issue or another and are short enough to encourage students to simply become used to the idea of practicing every day. Once the student has some basic fundamentals it is always nice to work on a piece of repertoire. Again certain challeges are adressed and met through this as well, but the goal is also to have a chance to perform it, displaying a practical application to the student's accomplishments and hopefully encouraging the student to become further interested. My teaching process looks like a mountain stream. We start at the top of the mountain, and the goal is to get to the bottom. As I teach using my tried and true techniques, we make our way down, but when I notice that my student needs extra help, or should be pushed more, we detour into another stream until we can return to our main path.
