Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
For my piano students, I teach them on a keyboard to get them familiarized with the layout of the piano. I teach proper fingerings, scales, and most importantly music theory. For my flute, clarinet, and saxophone students I work out of appropriate etude books for their performance level. I also teach jazz improvisation. I keep my students engaged and learning is always fun. I want each student to leave each lesson with a sense of learning something great! Read More

Each student is unique so I start out with seeing where they are and we go from there. If I have a student that is needing more help than usual I will help the student understand things in a way that is helpful for them. Students that have more experience, I use some of the method books that most school use such as Essential Elements for Band, Rubank method books, as well as new material customized for students. I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More

Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I've been a serious musician since taking up (baritone) saxophone at age 13, over 40 years ago. I first took up clarinet at 10, and later added flute, but saxophone has been my main focus over the years. I play around the Austin area in a variety of settings from big bands to musicals to rock/blues groups to studio recording to classical ensembles; pretty much whatever is asked for. Some of my previous teachers include Jim Riggs at the University of North Texas, Harvey Pittel at the University of Texas, Jeff Elwood at California State University Fullerton, and Joe Eckert at TCU. We like lessons to be fun and challenging. Sight reading abilities really help musicality and ability for spontaneity. Part of each lesson is spent on good posture, breathing and excellent practice methods. We slow down the difficult passages and get them played correctly. Attention to tone and a great armbiture are always kept in mind, as well as hand position and minimal movement as the songs and exercises are played. Read More

I never assume a student cannot succeed. Progress comes quickly with a variety of songs supported by successive exercises and methodology. Parental involvement is highly recommended and I try to work with parents to determine motivational techniques. I have found that students need a regular practice time 4 to 5 times a week, even if it is only a few minutes at a time; but, hopefully, we can find music that they like to sit down and play.
