Although my collegiate educational background is not primarily in music, I have vast knowledge of music theory, and understand that each student has individual needs. My biggest method that has the most success, no matter the subject of training is "I Do, We Do, You Do". When teaching a new musical concept, it is most important for a student to have an understanding of the principle. I would explain the concept, and give an example by demonstrating the concept (I Do), however many times the student needs me to do so, and they would practice the concept with me (We Do), and once they feel comfortable trying the concept on their own, I would have them demonstrate the concept for me until mastery is achieved (You Do). I work with Rubank or any method books provided by their band instructor. There will be supplemental materials, especially for more advanced students, that are instrument specific such as etudes and technical exercises. We will continue focusing on band literature, contemporary, classical, or solo literature depending on the goals of the students and their interests. While there are some general methods, it is best to meet the student where their needs are and tailor the specific methods to those needs. Read More

I started teaching in 2009 in Mississippi. I taught 6th grade band (beginner), 7th grade band, and high school. I taught in Mississippi for 5 years and just recently moved to Tennessee. While teaching, I've given private lessons to some of my students after school and to some students who did not attend my school. I always encourage doing a recital, entering competitions, and continuing on to college playing their instrument. I love motivating students and challenging them to be the best and nothing less. Above all else, music is supposed to be fun. I want my students to be excited about learning new things each week. Music is also a collaborative practice, so I think it is important for the student and the teacher to play together in a supportive environment to help reaffirm the week's lesson. I understand that each student is different, and weekly assignments will be given accordingly. This will require a reasonable weekly goal so that students can see their progress and feel good about their accomplishments, inspiring them to continue playing and learning. It is important to me that my students gain the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to continue making music after lessons with me end. I want to make sure that they develop a strong foundation for music understanding and are able to apply it to their chosen instrument. Read More

I have been teaching younger students for 4 years now, and I have taught mainly kids from ages 9-15. I am interested in any age of student who wants to learn! I love to get to know my students personally and tailor my lessons to them. I love planning out a practice routine with each student and making it personal so they never feel burnt out or overwhelmed when they're trying to enjoy their hobby. Read More
