I believe in being supportive, encouraging, and kind, yet firm. I encourage those students who are interested in performing by helping them to find opportunities. Every student is different and has different goals. We work to develop their potential. Some of my students are beginners and some have more experience. I like to make the lessons as fun as they can be and work on pieces and songs that the students enjoy! Read More

Watching a student of mine cultivate a passion for music is very satisfying! So, it is important that every student develops at his or her personal pace. I support this by creating sensible goals for my students at every lesson. Recognizing accomplishments increases a students desire to improve, and makes students excited to learn more. By understanding what motivates a student, I can actively modify my teaching to their wants and needs. Read More

For piano, I typically start of using Faber Piano Adventures paired with Edna Burnam's "A Dozen A Day." I like pairing the traditional lesson book - which focuses on the fundamentals and using familiar tunes to teach basic theory, note recognition, early technique, etc. with the Burnam exercises which gives the student tools to start incorporating other musical elements into their playing because these exercises become a warm-up routine instead of something to be checked off of a list. I run a home piano studio and drive to students' homes throughout the greater Milwaukee area. My home studio equipment consists of a full size digital piano with recording capabilities. I also have an extensive piano music library that I regularly lend out to my students. Read More

Lessons are catered to each individual student. The lessons are set up to maintain a balance between fun (to keep them encouraged) and necessary exercises to build the foundations that will excel them to the next level. Such methods will include basic music understanding such as posture/finger positions, reading music, ear training, improvisation, finger-memory exercises, etc., where they will both purposefully learn techniques and unknowingly develop very important musical faculties. My voice and piano studio teaching had it genesis in 1985 with a private home studio in Chicago. Since then, I have taught in church programs (choral students working on solo voice) as well as in the university setting (student teaching and TA voice class support). I have also led seminars in Group Voice and Cantor Training for Church and Liturgy and Worship. Wherever you are at, we accept, as a dual-team, and then, collectively design a way to help you achieve what it is you desire. Read More

I like to rely both on method books and insights I have gained over the years. I believe that a student's familiarity with all the major and minor scales is an important goal to arrive at as soon as it could be achieved. Just about as important is a steady rhythm. So, I stress this too. When my student reaches a satisfactory level, I invite him or her to participate in a recital. Read More

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
One of my proudest moments musically was being able to perform onstage at Carnegie Hall in New York City under conductor and composer John Rutter with my college choir! For one it gave me the opportunity to explore New York City, but also being able to perform a masterwork under the baton of the composer and seeing his thought process of how to get the sound he wanted was baffling.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
My other two instruments that I have studied over the years are piano and trombone. Piano I started playing and taking lessons for during my elementary school years, taking a hiatus from them during high school and picking them back up during college! My great grandma had a piano in her house that I would always mess around with and that habit stuck all the way to today! For trombone, the opportunity for me to start it up was presented by my high school's band teacher during my freshman year of high school. I took him up on the offer and have been playing ever since!
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I was originally going to pursue a Math Education degree before switching to Music Education, so would still be teaching most likely but a different subject.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to one day learn and perform the entirety of the Songs of Travel song cycle by Ralph Vaughan Williams. I have already learned a third of the pieces throughout my colleges career, and each piece is so nuanced and fun to perform that it makes me want to learn and sing the full scope!
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Music Education Degree for Choral and General Classrooms, meaning I am certified to teach all through K-12 in either general music topics or choir specifics. I originally was going to pursue MATH Education, but my love and passion to spread love for music outshined that path.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I have been a singer my entire life, so for me it was a natural choice! My mother and father were very musical people, as well as my siblings were always in choir or musical theater.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
A student can be at any age, but the main thing they need to have is an interest THEMSELVES to improve or experience more music. Forcing a student into lessons or ensembles when their heart really is not in it is the fastest path to burnout.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I am very fortunate to have all my teachers from my school years be very positive influences in my music journey. My elementary music teacher who I took piano lessons with, my middle and high school choir teacher who lead me through countless musicals and had faith in me to help out other members of the ensemble in sectionals, my high school band teacher who helped me bridge my choir experience into instrumental work, and so many more great educators were present and always willing to lend a helping hand.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Routine of practicing is important, but adding in working on material that brings you joy instead of the same warmups over and over again has you wanting to practice longer!
