My method of working with drums and percussion is to first get a sense of what the student's goals are. These include both goals involving general drums/percussion and career/performance goals. We will then work together to form a plan to achieve them. This will include exercises tailored directly to the student's needs and desires within drums/percussion as well as overall musical standings and guiding the student to repertoire that will both be fun for them to play and will teach them more about the concepts we are working on. Each students is different and needs a tailored lesson plan and approach. I like getting to know my students musical interests first and from there we start building the lesson. For my piano students depending on the age we start working on familiarizing the student with the instrument and we also choose a book that is appropriate for age and interests. For some students I use Faber, Bastien or Alfred. Read More
Instruments: Piano Drums
I tailor my lessons around the student's interests while balancing this with basic general technical foundations. Dividing the lesson between hand technique and performance, this allows for a balanced and inclusive teaching experience for both the teacher and student. Read More

Hi! I'm Kurt, singer-songwriter/composer, a multi-instrumentalist, and a patient and natural teacher. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, piano for almost 20. I release music as "The Broadest Blue"; I am in the process of recording my second album--the first (plus two singles) are available on all streaming platforms. I've played every little bar venue in the East Village, directing a complex musical outfit built to play music with brass and string parts (all music, lyrics, and arrangements written by me). In accordance with the Russian school of piano teaching, I start the student off with the foundational skills of correct hand position and proper touch. It is very important for the student to absorb these concepts early on in order to avoid potential bad habits as his/her study progresses. I follow by introducing the student to the essential skill of reading music. I then have him/her play from the Russian School of Piano Playing book, a collection of beautiful simple pieces. Read More

My teaching experience began when I was in college. I began teaching flute, clarinet, and saxophone lessons out of a music store in Upstate New York in 2016. This time was largely spent with complete beginners on their instruments, and it was incredibly rewarding. I focused on a balance of fundamentals like scales and long tones, formal repertoire such as classical and jazz pieces, and time for whatever the student was interested in whether that be pop, hip hop, or rock music. For young beginning piano students, I typically start with John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano: The First Grade Book and move up throughout the series from there. For young beginning voice students, I start with lessons on proper breath support, sight-singing, intonation exercises, and warm-ups to shape their voice. For both my piano and voice students, I establish a strong, classical foundation that is built on fundamentals to get their instrument working properly and then branch out to other genres from there. When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I think I’ve always known it would happen. I played dress up as a little girl, pretending I was notable broadway characters.
And in my mind I was performing in front of a full audience.
More practically, I think I really knew in college. I had wonderful professors and saw how much they loved to teach and many of them still performed.
Watching them be able to do both, was extremely encouraging and gave me hope in a bright future in musical artistry.
Of course, there are years of performing for free before you make it big, so I think when that first real offer happened, that was when I knew all the hard work was paying off.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My grandmother was a church pianist and a savant when it came to her understanding of music. While untrained, she still had an amazing ear and could analyze chords like a master.
My father was a percussionist and music minor in college and I grew up with him being my accompanist. Eventually I outgrew him and we needed to hire a professional to be able to keep up with the difficult arias I was performing.
My mother’s side of the family is much more visual when it comes to art forms. My grandfather is a world famous ceramic artist and I attribute both sides of the family being instrumental in fostering an artistic environment.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I absolutely love musical theater. I have since I was a little girl and I would pretend I was Maria leaving the Abby or Grizabella recalling her youth.
It’s my first love and I hold it close to my heart.
However, when you’ve put in the time, effort, and proper technique, singing opera is incredibly fun. There’s nothing like it. It feels like flying.
However there are very few genres I don’t enjoy performing. I’ve been able to be in shows where I’ve needed to sing Elton John, Lionel Ritchie, Rogers and Hammerstein, and Puccini all in one night.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I wasn’t a musician, I would still be acting. I can’t see myself doing anything outside of art full time.
I have plenty of friends from school who gave up when it got hard and are now doing other things. They have very respectable jobs, but I know many of them see what I’m doing now and wish that hadn’t given up so soon.
I always knew that I’d never be satisfied in my life if I gave up on performing and teaching. I’ve had plenty of different survival jobs along the way and it’s shown me that I can excel in anything I put my mind to, so I might as well excel at what I’m passionate about.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to perform the Bell Aria from Lakme or Zerbinetta’s aria from Ariadne auf Naxos with a full orchestra.
I performed the latter in my masters recital with a pianist and it gave me a taste for the real thing.
As far as a dream role, I would love to play Amalia in She Loves Me. I was incredibly fortunate to see Laura Benanti in the role on Broadway and I’m crossing my fingers that it comes back to broadway before I outgrow the role.
The entire piece is wonderful and I can’t wait to sing Vanilla Ice Cream in front of an audience.
