I like my lessons to be fun! I like to start my lesson with a "music swap": we each play one minute of a song that we found that week from youtube or spotify and take 30-60 seconds to say why we found it interesting or inspiring (it can be any genre). We then aim to discuss and practice a new technical skill and use exercises to develop it, we work on a song from the method series or a song that the student wants to work on (I often transpose pop/rock songs for my students), and then rhythm training, ear training, and music theory concepts are interspersed throughout. As a teacher, it is very rewarding to see my student progress and see their love for music deepen. I like to help students develop at their own speed while guiding them in the right path. I like to help my students find their own voice and creativity in music. It is very important for me to inspire my students by learning who they are and what they are interested in. Read More

I approach students with some humor and wit to open up their mind to me. I always try to make my students feel comfortable with me and bond with me which I think it is very important in teaching. I encourage to set realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Setting goals for every lesson will help them to feel achievement that would give them a motivation to be passionate with violin. My methods are largely dependent on each individual student - their own learning styles, goals, and interests guide the methods I use. For many of my beginning students who are children, I start with Faber's piano adventures. I use a mixture of method books, repetoire, and my own theory exercises until students can grasp solo repetoire. I also help students compose their own music, which we have fun doing! For adult students, I tailor my lessons to the student's goals. Read More

I began teaching lessons when I was in college five years ago, and have continued teaching in New Jersey. I do not yet have a home studio, but am willing to go straight to the student as well as conduct online lessons. I taught elementary and middle school music in the Oakland Public School District, and taught elementary general music at Sporting Hill Elementary School. I continue to teach music as a part of the Indian Hills Marching Band staff. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I think I’ve always known it would happen. I played dress up as a little girl, pretending I was notable broadway characters.
And in my mind I was performing in front of a full audience.
More practically, I think I really knew in college. I had wonderful professors and saw how much they loved to teach and many of them still performed.
Watching them be able to do both, was extremely encouraging and gave me hope in a bright future in musical artistry.
Of course, there are years of performing for free before you make it big, so I think when that first real offer happened, that was when I knew all the hard work was paying off.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My grandmother was a church pianist and a savant when it came to her understanding of music. While untrained, she still had an amazing ear and could analyze chords like a master.
My father was a percussionist and music minor in college and I grew up with him being my accompanist. Eventually I outgrew him and we needed to hire a professional to be able to keep up with the difficult arias I was performing.
My mother’s side of the family is much more visual when it comes to art forms. My grandfather is a world famous ceramic artist and I attribute both sides of the family being instrumental in fostering an artistic environment.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I absolutely love musical theater. I have since I was a little girl and I would pretend I was Maria leaving the Abby or Grizabella recalling her youth.
It’s my first love and I hold it close to my heart.
However, when you’ve put in the time, effort, and proper technique, singing opera is incredibly fun. There’s nothing like it. It feels like flying.
However there are very few genres I don’t enjoy performing. I’ve been able to be in shows where I’ve needed to sing Elton John, Lionel Ritchie, Rogers and Hammerstein, and Puccini all in one night.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I wasn’t a musician, I would still be acting. I can’t see myself doing anything outside of art full time.
I have plenty of friends from school who gave up when it got hard and are now doing other things. They have very respectable jobs, but I know many of them see what I’m doing now and wish that hadn’t given up so soon.
I always knew that I’d never be satisfied in my life if I gave up on performing and teaching. I’ve had plenty of different survival jobs along the way and it’s shown me that I can excel in anything I put my mind to, so I might as well excel at what I’m passionate about.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to perform the Bell Aria from Lakme or Zerbinetta’s aria from Ariadne auf Naxos with a full orchestra.
I performed the latter in my masters recital with a pianist and it gave me a taste for the real thing.
As far as a dream role, I would love to play Amalia in She Loves Me. I was incredibly fortunate to see Laura Benanti in the role on Broadway and I’m crossing my fingers that it comes back to broadway before I outgrow the role.
The entire piece is wonderful and I can’t wait to sing Vanilla Ice Cream in front of an audience.
