For beginning students who are children, I typically teach the book that they use in band class. If they/the parents would prefer a specific book or are not in band, I typically use Standard of Excellence, the red book and then progress to the blue book. Students will be presented with all the necessary skills in order to properly perform on the clarinet: breathing, posture, hand and finger position, embouchure, tone production, articulation, technique, rhythmical precision, transposition, and sight-reading. A wide selection of clarinet literature will be presented: classical, romantic and contemporary eras (baroque transcriptions as needed). Orchestral excerpts may be taught throughout the course of study (depending on students desire). I love teaching because I believe most, if not all, people love music and can learn to love making music. I want it to be fun for them, to keep them interested. I believe that a set of expectations on the student is required to keep them motivated, but I am never upset or disappointed if they don't practice enough. I think keeping them involved in music is the most important part, and I know that many students will not pursue a full time career in music, but music is valuable to them in so many ways. Read More

My name is Patrick and I did my Bachelors in Music, specifically Clarinet Performance at Baldwin Wallace University. From there I went to pursue my Master's Degree in Music at the University of Akron, graduating Suma Cum Laude. Every student progresses at their own rate and it's important to give students attainable short-term goals in the service of long-term achievements. It is also important to know what drives each student and understand why they want to take private lessons. I began teaching privately as a high school student, working with begnning students at the middle school. I have taught privately in my home and in students' homes since graduating from college. Regular practice is very important and something I emphasize with my students. I like to include a mixture of classical and modern music in my lessons, so that students enjoy what they are learning and playing. My style of lesson is like water.. No two students are alike. I must first test a beginner to see if they're tone deaf.. An advanced student is tested for any limitations or handicaps. Any good coach would study the student for any weakness, and formulate a viable plan to bridge the gap again to take them further faster..
