This is my basic approach for getting a new student started at the drums. I like to start students out on the practice pad at first. This gives them a chance to focus on learning good technique and understanding basic musical notation. Starting out on a huge drumset is not only a little overwhelming, but there is only so much they can accomplish until they grasp the basics. Below is a general list of the things that will be covered in the first month or so for a newcomer to the drums. -Proper technical approach (grip, hand/ arm position, stroke) -Musical notation, note values (basic reading- quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets, rests, etc.) -Rolls (double stroke, single stroke, press) -Rudiments (flams, paradiddles, etc.) -Accents -Snare Drum Solos Various instructional books are used including- “Syncopation”, “Stick Control”, “Modern Reading, text in 4/4”, “Wilcoxin Book”, and more. I draw inspiration largely from my Rudolf Steiner-inspired pre-college education and my Carl Orff-inspired higher education. Waldorf/Steiner education "emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils" while the Orff Approach "combines music, movement, drama, and speech into lessons that are similar to child's world of play." I would describe my teaching style as firm, even strict at times, but never mean or dry. Enjoyment, weather that be in the form of accomplishment, fulfillment, or just plain fun, is the key for success! Although I do think every student needs to know about certain aspects of playing and listening, every student is going to have different ideas of where they want to go with drums and music. Read More

Teaching has been my profession since before my college days, when I begun by teaching guitar lessons to classmates. Since college, it has been my primary occupation. I lead by example as a musician, and I encourage regular quality practice and cultivate an attitude of discipline and a drive to greatness. A cross-discipline in music is my primary approach to teaching, and I make a point of educating my students in how to communicate with other musicians. Read More

For every student, I first find out their personal interests in music as well as outside the music to develop a personal agenda for them. This personal agenda consists of different basic training, exercises, and repertoire that are designed to make them a better overall musician all the while becoming more skilled at the type of genre they wish to learn. On top of that, we spend a small portion of our lesson just listening and analyzing music. Read More
