I was playing live music almost six nights a week, and started helping out as an assistent at Tipitina's Sunday Workshop for young musicians. There I helped and watched the great Johnny Vidacovich teach young aspiring musicians the art of playing in an ensemble. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. Naturally everyone is different and will progress at their own pace, so I would guide my instruction according to their wants, needs, skill level and also challenge them to venture beyond their comfort zone in each lesson. Being familiar with music is key and this can be accomplished at any age. The more a student becomes familiar with music, the more connections and comparisons the student will be able to make between drummers in all kinds of settings and genres of music, which will then enhance the student's playing on the drum set. In my ongoing experience as a student I have learned that drum lessons, or any formal instruction on something artistic, must be representative of the art itself. To sit a young/beginning drummer down at a practice pad all day and force him/her to learn the basics, is to stifle that persons passion and desire to play the instrument. I began teaching as soon as I could. My dad held piano lessons out of our house and inspired me to teach guitar (the only instrument my dad wasn't terribly good at). I also taught trumpet, French horn and piano throughout high school. When I got to college, no one at Berklee really needed lessons in instruments anymore, however, I spent a lot of time tutoring kids in Music Theory, Arranging and other more technical aspects of music.
