Instruments: Drums
I began teaching in 2008, shortly after beginning my studies at the University of Washington. My private students have ranged from total beginners to advanced, each one presenting a unique set of interests and abilities to work with. In addition to teaching my own students, I have much experience as a substitute percussion teacher at Northshore Junior High School (Kingsgate, WA) and Spotlight Studios (Woodinville, WA). I have also presented many clinics and workshops at local schools including Garfield High School, Edmonds-Woodway High School, Ballard High School, Eckstein Middle School, and Holy Names Academy, as well as for Seattle JazzED. I am a very hands-on teacher. We do lots of improvisation and call and response games and sometimes I turn on a record or even bring a guitar to jam with the student. Playing drums is a very visceral, tactile excersize, and I often tell students, "That right there, that is how it's supposed to sound! Memorize that feeling and try to recreate it everytime." I am also a huge advocate of having students listen to as much music as possible. Read More

No matter where the student starts from, I always spend a significant amount of time in the first lesson discussing with them what they want to gain, what they are interested in, and how much time and effort they want to put into this endevor. It is important to me to understand the student so that I can cater to their needs and desires, and hopefully encourage them to continue playing music. Read More

My lessons are designed to fit each student's level and area of interest. For example, if a student wants to learn how to play blues piano, I'll assign him exercises to compliment learning that idiom, i.e. scales, chords and rhythm patterns. people learn best when they are interested in at that moment. I use the same philosophy teaching drums and trumpet. Specific methods are tailored to the student's current ability and age. Read More

Mylove for teaching stems frommy desire to pass onmy knowledge of musicto others. Helping others develop a passion for music is somethingIfeel isnecessary tocopein a world that can often be overwhelming without an outlet for expressions, such as music. I have been instructing students in percussion since I was a Junior in high school and taught at the Denny Way Music School on Capital Hill from 2013-2015. I have instructed students, from elementary school to adulthood, in areasincludingmusic theory, ear training and drum performance. Read More

I've been teaching for the last year and a half in both the private capacity and for a music school in West Seattle. I've helped students prepare for recitals, parades, living room performances or to start a band of their own and I love the variety that teaching the drums provides. My focus is on the students' interests first as I find that this is the best way to encourage practice and make the instrument fun! Read More
