I learned from the best teachers who are proactive. I am always studying music and when I was developing into a professional musician I practiced many hours every week for years. When I realized I was performing with bad posture and poor ergonomics I went back and developed a much better technique which I use to this day. I can immediately identify problems with your style and show you how to fix them. Read More

My teaching experience began with arranging and instructing drum line parts for a youth drum corps. After having children of my own, I realized I had a knack for working with children. I began teaching in 1999 and have maintained a private studio since then while also working for various music schools and after-school music programs. I've worked with students from ages 5 to 75 and have found that students are very receptive to my energetic and engaging personality while being reassured by my ease of communication and patience. Music should be fun and enjoyable, not stressful, and I strive to create a relaxed atmosphere that is supportive and encouraging. Read More

My teaching style is straightforward and practical, always emphasizing the goals of each student specifically. The benefits of reading and understanding sheet music as it relates to your instrument far outweigh those of simple tablature used for guitar and banjo etc. However, in some cases it is practical to use non-traditional forms of instruction. A good teacher's goal is to help the student advance, even if it doesn't happen in a pre-conceptualized fashion. Read More

I'm very laid-back but focused. I expect students to work at this and put forth the effort. I also understand that life happens and a student may have missed some practice time. I'm okay with that. My teacher did that for me so I'll do the same for my students. I don't believe in over-criticizing a student. I like to positively reinforce accomplishments and good habits and take the time to explain and fix issues that need improvement. Read More
