For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

This practice drumstick shaves months and perhaps years off of mastering these techniques and it is an indispensable teaching tool during our lessons. I am a member of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation's "Support Music Coalition", a network of non-profit organizations, schools, businesses, and individuals working hard to keep music education strong. I am also a member of the Sabian Education Network, an organization of international educators, and an instructor through the D'Addario Education Collective. Read More

I do not limit my students to a predetermined method. I find, through my own experiences, that this is tedious as well as boring. There are many books I use, including Ted Reed's syncopation for all levels of students, but I focus most of my time with a student to finding out what inspires them to want to learn the drums, and go from there. With every student I start with the basics of technique. Read More

My teaching experience began in 2001, during an after school program. I facilitated a drum circle and taught lessons to kids from ages 8 to 15 years old. This lead to several parents of the students requesting private drum lessons. I have been teaching privately in student's homes over the last 15 years. I find that defining the student’s goals, and centering the lesson around those goals keeps the individual inspired to progress forward. Read More

I place a lot of importance on my students knowing HOW to make the sound they want to make, not merely on imitation. I desire for you to play and form your own style, which is strong and impressive without any manipulation. My training comes from my experience studied as an orchestral percussionist and drumset player, but you'll find that these techniques are applicable to effective playing in all styles and genres. My teaching experience spreads throughout multiple genres of music and is not limited to the drums. In college while I was living amongst 7 other peers, I was constantly asked about how my creative process worked and how I created music from scratch. Using software such as logic and a typical 88 key piano, i would give mock lessons on how to create mood in music from simple chords which led me to realize how much I actually liked teaching.
