My love for teaching began as a peer tutor in college. I tutored students in piano, guitar, bass ear training, and music theory. I began to love teaching when I noticed the change and progress it creates within people. While in college, I taught at a musical theatre camp as a music teacher. I taught music theory, ear training, and vocal music. Right after I graduated college I was accepted into the music education program at Teachers College Columbia University where I received my masters degree in music education along with certification in New York state to teach Pre-K through 12. I first like to see what music the student is into. Most of the time students who take up drums want to learn a groove from their favorite band or song. It helps get them engaged immediately and want to play. It's good to take the first couple of lessons to gauge my students pace and see how they progress. At the beggining of each lesson it's good to just warm up with some simple playing excercises and lossen them up. Read More

For beginners drummers I like to introduce them to rudiments. For aspiring orchestral players is always important to build a repertoire, this is a list of materials I use: 150 Rudimental Solos - Charlie Wilcoxon Bass Drum Technique - Ted Reed Portraits in Rhythm - Cirone Beyond bop drumming - John Ryley It all depends to what the students are interested in. For aspiring popular music performers the most valuable resource are recordings. Read More

I am incredibly fortunate to have access to the resources at NYU and to love teaching music more and more every day: I have had practical experience in woodwind, brass, string, voice, and percussion pedagogy, as well as music in early childhood and for students of all abilities. My teachers include Jason Noble (instrumental conducting), Paul Speiser (choral conducting), Kim McCord (childhood/special ed music pedagogy), Ethan Hein (electronic music pedagogy), and Christopher Bush (clarinet performance). All students in my music program are introduced to the Quality Music Instruction Curriculum. The books in this curriculum, allow each student to advance at his/her own pace while maintaining consistent progress. In addition to the Quality Music Instruction Curriculum, lessons are supplemented with the Bastien series. I lay the foundation for music by teaching all of the necessary rudiments of music such as scales, fingering, chord structures and then I incorporate music that's appealing to the students. Read More

Originally from Dallas, TX, I have nearly 20 years of music education experience at the elementary, secondary, and adult/college levels. After graduating from The University of North Texas, I spent several years as a band director in DFW before moving abroad to teach and perform. Recently, after spending 7 years as a professional musician in New York City, I realized how much I missed teaching in Texas! So it's time to return to my home and do for students what my music teachers did for me many years ago. Read More

Seriousness and also keeping fun and interesting. Being serious to understand music is a science, and fun not to let it become tedious. Most music students don’t stick to practicing for the mere reason nobody has ever showed them the right way to practice, practice with the mind and not as a robot, and keeping it interesting and challenging. You need to challenge yourself, put yourself to the edge. Read More
