I begin with a basic rock approach to drumming that prepares students to enter a wide range of other musical styles. The first lessons focus on the fundamentals of drumming while still placing emphasis on musicality. If the fundamentals are not framed in a musical context, it is difficult for some students to stay excited and develop a passion for the drums. Next we will set goals together and a time frame to achieve their goals. I always start beginning students with proper technique. I believe that great technique is the foundation of a great musician. I use a few different method books including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer, Modern Rudimental Swing Solos, Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials among others. I also believe that all musicians, especially drummers should have a strong rhythmic foundation so I incorporate sight-reading, call and response, and ear training to build the young musicians' instincts. It is a healthy outlet which teaches kids and adults alike the joy of interation with a group of people and can carry out in all kinds of aspects in life.
