I have a relaxed and fun style of teaching. I encourage the use of rudiments and fundamentals to build good playing habits and to build strength and speed. Practice is an obligatory part of learning and is expected to become routine for the student. Practice and learning will be fun! Learning to play songs that we love is the best part! The student and I will make a list of songs and styles to work towards playing. Read More

I began my journey as a mentor and teacher as a camp counselor back when I was in High School. Since then, I have developed my teaching style and experience through offering private and group music lessons in after school programs, music studios, and middle schools across Massachusetts. From 2013-2015 I went back to school for my masters in Community Music Education, where I studied traditional and experiential learning, progressive and alternative education, as well as arts administration and childhood development. My name is Joshua. I recently graduated from Ball State University in Indiana. My passion for drumming began as a teenager, and I was fortunate enough to have a very supportive family who encouraged me to do what I loved. I will always be grateful for that. Given the right kind of support and teaching, I firmly believe that anyone with the drive to learn can have a very rewarding and fun experience with the drums. Read More

I always start beginning students with proper technique. I believe that great technique is the foundation of a great musician. I use a few different method books including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer, Modern Rudimental Swing Solos, Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials among others. I also believe that all musicians, especially drummers should have a strong rhythmic foundation so I incorporate sight-reading, call and response, and ear training to build the young musicians' instincts. For begining students I like to start from a foundational stand point. It is very important to enstill good practice habits and technique in order not to develop bad habits in your playing. For drumming and other instruments, starting with rudiments, learning how to read music, and playing scales are a great way to help a student build their technique and ear up. I think it is really important to ask what kind of music the student is into or show them how the foundational basics can be used in an actual playing situation instead of just a boring regimented routine. For those who are just starting on an instrument, I usually focus on basic technique. Bass and guitar are both physical instruments in their own way, and getting acclimated to the feel of it is key to having success on it. For bass, I typically teach out of the Suzuki book series, while as for guitar, I use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, however, I am happy to teach whatever method a student or their parents feel strongly about. I believe in teaching people to be true musicians and tap into their own creative spirits, not just to be technicians at the mercy of what's written for them. With that said, I take a balanced approached between learning traditional fundamentals and some of my own more philosophical approach, drawing on metaphors and analagous experiences to help frame this learning experience in ways the student can relate and understand. I call this The Art of Practice, which you'll be able to apply elsewhere in your life as well. Read More
