I graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Performance, earning the music department's Outstanding Achievement in Music Award in 1991. From 1994-1997 I taught applied and ensemble percussion at Shepherd University and, since then, have developed a successful private teaching practice in the Baltimore/Washington area. Many of my students have achieved success at the county, state and professional levels. For students who are beginners, I usually start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements 2000 books. Not only are they a great source for fingering charts and basic instrument fundamentals, but they also offer great full band exercises in band balance and togetherness as well. Once the beginner student learns more fingerings and is able to read music from the book faster, I will give the student beginner etudes and studies to build their embouchure and fingering skills. I've been teaching private music lessons since I first started college in 2004. I've taught at community centers, afterschool programs, and music stores since graduating in 2008, and started my own home studio about 2 years ago. I like to teach the rudiments, as the fundamentals of music and of one's instrument provide the solid base upon which all else is built, though I also stress creativity for all my students. My experience with teaching began when I would work at the local music store in Springfield Va. during summer breaks. Even though I graduated with a Bachelors in Performance, teaching was something I enjoyed having seen progress with students. After college, teaching became a part time job for me and has at times, become more important than performing or recording.
