My school couldn't afford to fund faculty to lead the drumline, so during my junior and senior years, I took on the role of teaching new students, some of whom had never even held a drumstick, to be performance-ready in a short amount of time. For piano I use a combination of the Bastien books, if you are a beginner. For more intermediate or advanced I use whatever music the student is interested in. It could be the Great American Songbook or classical music. For percussion, for beginners I use the Garwood Whaley book, Fundamentals for the Snare Drum. During the first lesson I always assess where the student is the learning timeline with their instrument. I also find out what the student's goals are with music. Once this has been established we work on a plan of action to acheive those goals. Since the vast majority of drum students are primarily interested in learning drumset skills, we will start working on this from the very first lesson. There will be a balance between musical concepts and repertoire. The deeper we go in learning the song and learning the recording, the more the student will benefit.
