No matter what age/skill level I split time during lessons into activities that develop technique and language, and compositional, creative activities that help each student explore their instrument and what they have to say with it. I have been teaching now for more than 7 years, starting fresh out of High School. I encourage my students to follow their dreams and put their all into their craft. I find that my students reap better rewards when they have a consistent and concise method of practicing, to which they can develop with my help and then "out grow" their need for my instruction. I have various teaching styles that I adapt based on the individual I am teaching. Some people learn best through visual and auditory methods, while others require written instructions. I am comfortable teaching in both styles, but I have noticed that most individuals learn best through hands-on experience. Nonetheless, I can adjust my teaching approach to accommodate anyone who wants to learn how to play the drums.
