Students don't learn if they don't feel motivated or enjoy what they are doing. Therefore, I make it a point to set an agenda in each lesson that starts and ends with something fun, and is also predictable so that students know intuitively how to go about their practicing. During each lesson, the student and I set realistic goals for practicing and, despite the popular saying that the more time you spend practicing, the more effective your practice is, I have learned from many students that each student practices and learns from practicing in their own way. For beginners I ask what are their favorite songs and go from there. If they do not know then I usually play a popular song. I hope to get the beginner attuned with playing along and the importance of timing. With my guidance the student builds their own beginner book through our lessons. I give all students activities to work on during the week that I expect for them to show me at the next lesson. Read More

I have been playing music since I was about 8 years old. I started with the drums once my parents tired of my "playing" the kitchen! My first priority is to make sure the student has fun. This keeps my second priority in check, which is to teach the student as much as I can in the short amount of time we have. There is so much I love about drumming that I want to share, and the focused, eager, and attentive students receive the full benefit of my teaching style. However, many students are more relaxed, so I adjust my pace accordingly. Read More

My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. If I was to emphasize anything about learning the art, it would be the understanding of interpretation and how to make any music into something that is uniquely yours. Read More
