I began teaching private lessons 9 years ago, working with all ages and all levels. I am always aiming for the best balance between fun, discipline, technique and freedom. This includes my combination of fundamentals of technique, musical games, improvisation and focus training. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points! Giving students the right motivation and the correct point of view on the matter can not only change the level of musicianship, but can also change you as a human being. Read More

I teach rudiments, technique, and reading drum charts for my beginner students. Wity more advanced students, we study sightreading, and explore different styles of drumming. Typically, I favor using drum method books, and listening to recordings for students to use and listen to in between lessons. Keeping a steady tempo is of course an essential part of good drumming -- I use a metronome to help mystudents achieve that skill, and encourage them to use one when practicing. Read More

I have been teaching privately and in group settings for 9 years. In my private studio, I have maintained around 25 students. In group settings, I have taught many drumlines, percussion ensembles, and middle school percussion classes. I love to assist students in their desire to explore music and they physical skills associated with it. It is my desire to walk with students as they take the necessary steps to become more familiar with an instrument and music in general. Read More

This is my basic approach for getting a new student started at the drums. I like to start students out on the practice pad at first. This gives them a chance to focus on learning good technique and understanding basic musical notation. Starting out on a huge drumset is not only a little overwhelming, but there is only so much they can accomplish until they grasp the basics. Below is a general list of the things that will be covered in the first month or so for a newcomer to the drums. -Proper technical approach (grip, hand/ arm position, stroke) -Musical notation, note values (basic reading- quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets, rests, etc.) -Rolls (double stroke, single stroke, press) -Rudiments (flams, paradiddles, etc.) -Accents -Snare Drum Solos Various instructional books are used including- “Syncopation”, “Stick Control”, “Modern Reading, text in 4/4”, “Wilcoxin Book”, and more. I began my musical journey on the drums, which quickly led me to the guitar and bass guitar as well, all three of which I studied with Matt Thompson in Frederick, MD. In high school, I ended up gravitating towards the bass as my primary instrument, and a growing interest in jazz caused me to add the upright bass to my collection of instruments. Little did I know that this would become an even bigger obsession of mine! Read More

I began to play music at age 9. My mom gave my sister a x22number keyboardx22 with x22number music booksx22 for Christmas but she never touched it. I grew curious and approached the keyboard and after quickly deciphering how the numbers system worked burned the entire book in two months enabling myself to play pretty advanced songs. After a few years, I became fascinated with James Brown's music and that's when I knew I wanted to experiment with drums.
