Flutist Gina I. “Rattles speakers and expectations with stop-time razzle, vocal (flute-talk) and electronic (phaser) effects" (NYC Jazz Record). The New York-based musician is a recent recipient of a 2016 New Music USA Impact Award and a 2015 New Music USA Project Grant. ​Over the past year, Gina has performed in collaboration with artists stemming from the New York Downtown music scene incorporating classical and contemporary music, free improvisation, and electronics. In 2016 Izzo released Crashing Through Fences by Timo Andres on Ian David Rosenbaum's debut album Memory Palace (VIA Records), and was selected for a fellowship at the Bang on a Can Festival Residency at MASSMoCA where she performed and premiered works by John Luther Adams, Julia Wolfe, Missy Mazzoli, Louis Andriessen, among many others. I start beginners off with the Rubank Elementary Method, which introduces reading, scales, arpeggios, and expressive devices such as dynamics and articulation. I also like students to start with improvisation, composition, and ear training as soon as possible. I encourage them to both work on whatever repertoire interests them and find new types of music they don't know they're interested in yet.
