I do tailor my music lessons for the individual student. There really is no making a general statement for a specific person. There are, however, some very fundamental aspects of learning music for all people which will definitely include practicing and mastering scales of all type, performing with others, and using the ears to truly listen to intervals and the emotions that are invoked by performing certain keys in specific styles. For beginner's I tend to start with lesson books, especially Hal Leonard's Essential Elements because that's what I learned from! I move up from there and like to teach lessons from all different types of genre's and also teach different techniques such as vibrato, jazz flute, etc. Scales and warm-up's are an essential part of every lesson and I always do them no matter what age student I am teaching! For beginning students (adult and children) I like to be sure that their knowledge about fundamentals is solid. I believe ear training is paramount. Not everyone can sing, but secure pitch discrimination can help all musicians (even percussionists). I encourage all students to participate in ensembles (band, choral also). Knowledge of phrasing is also important to aspiring musicians. Students need support from listening to others play (live performances, radio, and recordings). Read More

My teaching philosophy closely aligns with my research experiences as well as my own professional experience as a performer and pedagogue. I focus on regular performance and exposure to a wide range of topics, repertoire and ideas, allowing for intersection with other disciplines. Influence and inspiration can come from unexpected sources, and I foster that potential in my students. My lessons include discussions of style as well as body awareness while playing. Read More

I am a friendly, calm teacher which is my style. I motivate my students a lot but do it in a positive way. All my students understand that they ultimately decide whether not they will have success or not, no one else. It is my job to guide you and to give you advice, but in the end the student must be the one who does the work. Students who think in this way usually do have the most success. Read More

I teach each student based on their needs and goals. Fundamentals are key to playing well. I always want learning to be fun but effective. I teach the student how to practice to reach goals and help the student set goals. I teach in terms of musicality followed by technicality. Tone is what allows a performer to tell a story, but technique is also key. By developing a strong sense of fundamentals, musicality is easier to achieve. Read More
