Once I started at Temple University as a duel classical/jazz major, I was able to participate in an extremely wide range of jazz, classical, fusion, funk, rock, and world music ensembles. I also started working as a freelance musician in Philadelphia and along the East Coast. Around this same time (early 1990s), I was able to start teaching private music lessons at a local music store. During my time teaching at this store, I was able to begin to develop my teaching style and quickly discover that I really loved teaching and helping my students progress and have fun playing music. I do my best to foster a warm and safe environment with all of my students. In all of my first lessons, I establish rules that explain that we must treat our lesson space, our instruments, and each other with respect. I cater each lesson to each student; every person is different, therefore every lesson must be different. During each lesson, we set realistic yet challenging goals for the next upcoming lessons. Regular lessons help so much with motivation. If you are interested in jazz improvisation, I have a some tested ideas that work. Read More

I began teaching when I was a high school student, about 7 years ago, with the flute. I was part of the school symphony so took students from my class and tutored them on their technique and stamina to play richer, louder, longer tones. After becoming involved with more children as well as children with special needs through my work in university I began teaching musicality to kids in different settings, which led me to start teaching the piano to beginners. In addition to working with standard repertoire and method books, I devise my own exercises to help with breath control, tone production, rhythm, aural skills, and other topics. I dedicate particular time and attention to the areas where I believe each individual student can benefit the most (e.g., tone quality, counting, etc.). For young students, I like to incorporate music games and improvisation into my teaching, both of which help the student develop essential musical skills in a fun, relaxed way. Read More
