My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons 15 years ago, and have been teaching students at my home and at students' houses. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I emphasize for my students. To truly become an accomplished musician, a student must be motivated to practice daily. I like to think I'm a laid-back kind of guy, though I can get loud and boisterous sometimes when a student figures something hard out. I wonder sometimes if I don't get more excited about a student's breakthrough than he does! My wife sometimes tells me I have no "indoor voice," lol. I don't give grades (except for my college students, because I have to), but if I did, the grade would be either "A" or "I," as in incomplete, as in do it over until it's great. Read More

Since the age of 11, Anna Kate has held a tremendous passion for classical flute. It was her junior year of high school when she decided to pursue a career in music and started her journey by joining the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, which toured in France, performing at large concerts in various cities. Subsequently she was accepted to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School to further advance her studies in flute, requiring extensive time commitments of practicing five plus hours per day. Briefly: The flute teaching methods and books I use vary and are based on the needs of a student. As a student advances, I also include music theory and basic ear training. A little more in-depth: As many students have begun their flute studies in their elementary school band, I look over the books and music they have been playing from in school, listen to their sound and technique, watch their posture, and make a decision on teaching books to expand and enhance their current level. I have started teaching private lessons since high school through the Suzuki Method, and into my college and graduate school years.  I have taken classes on pedagogy and teaching artistry in creative ways, such as teaching students to do improvisations and asking questions in order to get them engaged in the learning process.  I have played classical, jazz, pop, and latin music, and can teach an array of different genres. My methods differ for each instrument. For piano I will start with Alfred's basic piano course if the student is a beginner. It helps students visualize the basic techniques for sitting and playing the piano in a way that will prevent injury. From there we walk through the book until the student understands how the keys and reading music works. After this, I start to assign different songs and/or assignments that match the student's learning style and interest in music. Read More
