The most difficult skill for beginner flutists is sound production. For beginning students we will focus the first couple weeks primarily on making a sound and forming the correct embouchure, or lip position. We learn simple tunes by ear during this time and begin to associate them with musical notation. Once a good understanding of sound production is achieved we begin to broaden the range and learn new notes. Once I began student teaching on Long Island, I began building a small studio of flute students. I then moved to NYC where I taught in the NYC public school system for 9 years teaching 6-12 grade. In that time, I started the music program at my school where I built 5 choruses, an orchestra, recorder class, a Broadway appreciation class, a step team and completed numerous other tasks.
