I use a wide variety of music in my lessons and customize the exact curriculum based on each student's goals, learning style, requests, and what I determine will be the right mix to maximize their progress and allow them to enjoy their practice time and the lessons. I also provide mp3 background tracks for most of the songs used in the lesson. I tend to favor Essential Elements for students (including adults) when they are first learning to play their instrument, but I also teach from the other band method books to accommodate what each student is using in their respective band class. For flute, I use method books by Trevor Wye.  If the student is a beginner, I will start the student with the Beginners Book for the Flute by Trevor Wye (Book 1 and 2.)  Once the student is finished with these books, the student is now ready for the intermediate and advanced books by Trevor Wye.  It is a set of 5 books that focuses on each aspect of the flute, such as tone and technique. I am happy to work on standard classical flute repertoire, contemporary flute repertoire, and music in non-classical styles. For young piano students, our first few lessons will be dedicated to posture, hand position, basic rhythm, and learning note names on the piano keyboard. We will then progress to music reading. I usually use Faber's Piano Adventures series for fun, level-appropriate pieces. We will also continue to play rhythm games and ear-training games in order to develop musicality. Read More

I don't have any experience at this time but I think that it is very important to get a regular constant practice schedule so that they can understand and practice the key points that were taught to them. I will give the students some classical music and modern music because I know that it will help the students learn if they play something they would like to play. I was an assistant instructor for San Jose State's Summer Flute Institute, which involved giving private lessons, teaching beginner-level flute classes, coaching an intermediate chamber group, and judging a advanced-level performance competition.
