I use a wide variety of music in my lessons and customize the exact curriculum based on each student's goals, learning style, requests, and what I determine will be the right mix to maximize their progress and allow them to enjoy their practice time and the lessons. I tend to favor Essential Elements for students (including adults) when they are first learning to play their instrument, but I also teach from the other band method books to accommodate what each student is using in their respective band class. I like to use scales, singing, and creative composition to get my students to think outside of the box and learn to independently create music while learning theory basics. I'm a composer-flutist and flute/piano teacher who received a PhD in music composition and theory with departmental distinction from UC Davis in June 2021. I also hold a master's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory and a bachelor's from Columbia University. My own compositions have been performed at music festivals across the U.S. and in Europe.
