For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson.  Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire.  Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority.  I believe the connection between the mind and body is very important, and you will find me often asking questions to engage the students in being aware of what they are doing as they are playing. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I emphasize for my students. To truly become an accomplished musician, a student must be motivated to practice daily. I am a woodwind specialist who has made a career out of performing in pit orchestras for Broadway musicals. I have performed at regional theaters in New York and Colorado and toured the United States and Canada. For five of my six years in Illinois, I taught saxophone and sax quartet at McKendree University. I've always maintained a private studio of students ranging in age from 8 to 80+. I've worked with students who have been on their own for a while, helping to correct any bad habits that had snuck in. I've helped students reinforce the technical basics of scales, daily exercises, breathing, and long tones so that their music soars.
