We all approach and learn at different levels and paces. I watch my students growth on an individual basis. That being said, I set goals and give assignments that are achievable. I do enjoy letting the student pick a song they want to learn and going over the song together. But I also bring in my own exercises and knowledge in site reading, music theory, harmony, practice methods and proper technique. Read More

I believe music is about expression and it is rewarding to find a way to help students to develop their own style. Therefore, it is important to know the student's needs and wants in order to establish a lesson plan. After reaching this first step it is easy to create some goals for each lesson. When the student feels that his needs and wants are fulfilled in the lessons, s/he gets more confident to work on new challenges. Read More

I started out tutoring in college to help out, then was asked by the school district if I would tutor professionally, to the elementary students in the San Bernardino CA area. I have since expanded to tutoring privately, and have taught anywhere from 5 year olds learning piano to high school students wanting that coveted first chair position in trumpet to college level students wanting to learn guitar and beyond. I've even taught music theory and basic voice. Read More

My teaching experience started while I was in college working on my Bachelor of Music degree. I gave private lessons to fellow students at my college and also was a substitute teacher for the music school in my hometown. From working with multiple guitar teachers over the course of 10 years, I have picked up on what did and did help me when I was learning. From that, I am able to adapt my methods for the individual student. Read More

From that moment, I knew that I had found my calling. I embarked on a journey of musical exploration, diving into classical compositions, copying TV Themes, and contemporary melodies. This eclectic mix of genres has enriched my understanding of music and allows me to connect with students from diverse musical backgrounds. I went on to study guitar at GIT/Musician's Institute, studying guitar with Scott Henderson, and bass guitar with Jeff Berlin. Read More

My methods for teaching involve the topics I learned in my Guitar Technique course. I introduce the CAGED System. Where basic open position chords are moved around the fretboard to cover scale shapes, and arpeggios. This is a great way to map the fretboard, and provide positions to improvise on solos. With this I also blend music theory in which I call the mixture "Fretboard Theory." Theory is what we cover in scales that tell what quality they have, (Major, Minor, ETC). Read More

For young children I usually use the Suzuki method books for song selection and through those we can focus on the basic fundamentals of positioning and technical development. It is easy to see what needs to be addressed through those first few songs and we can go from there. For older children and adults we can select from a wider variety with input from the student and we can work on whatever technical issues arise based on the level of the student. Read More

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I have a schedule that I divide into specific sections.
I always warm up, like if it was a sport., you're using your muscles and tendons so I want to take care of that first. Then start pace by pace already on my instrument and from there it could be scales, arpeggios, chord tones, triads, chords, multiple chord voicings, substitutions, extensions, reading, ear trainning, theory, new songs, solos, licks etc. All lasting less than 30 minutes to focus totally on the topic and get the best out of each one of them,
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
Guitar Performance Degree.
I chose that degree to have an in-depth knowledge of things I always watched online that my idols played or what I heard on the music I played on my Ipod.
Being an alumni from Musicians Institute has been something I am proud of. I learned a lot from so many teachers, not only guitarists but every musician there. They have different approaches and experiences either performing, learning and teaching. It gave me a wide spectrum of the industry and what being a musician is like.
I love what I do and can't see myself doing anything else. If I can help anybody with what I love, that's really rewarding.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I believe to know what you like you have to try everything, even what you don't like. I have certain styles more ingrained in me than others but I like al kinds of music.
My love for music started with the guitar virtuosos from the 80's. The music I love the most is metal, rock and of course blues!
I took jazz and funk lessons in college, it could get as complicated as you want it to be.
I've been all over the place, from listening to classical music to punk rock, to 80's rock and pop. No matter what it is if I like it I like it.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I always wanted to play guitar and still can't picture myself doing anything else. My love and passion for music kept growing since I was a kid and to have a better grasp and understanding for music as a full band I started lessons for drums, bass, piano and even singing.
I have more than a basic knowledge fro them and can play couple songs. Taking those private lessons helped me to compose my own songs and start different projects.
I know the approach of every instrument is different but thinking different, takes music to another level.
