I harken back to a variety of literature in music to teach music and instrument theory, as well as instrumental proficiency. Some of my favorite works for guitar instruction are Guthrie Govan's Creative Guitar 1 and 2 as well as Carl Fischer's Guitar Grimoire. I typically will adjust my teaching style based on the age and experience of the student, as well as the goals put forth, as I believe it is imperative to meet a student at their specific aspirations. As mentioned before, I learned that I have an affinity to make the music fun. It's never just work with me. I believe that a musician has done his/her job not when he/she can channel the energy of the music onto the listener. I love watching a student's face light up when they are able to play a lick or a statement that they never thought they would be able to play, or when I see the proverbial lightbulb going on atop their heads. My lessons are based on a transfer of enthusiasm. When I get my students to hear what I hear and feel what I feel, there's nothing more rewarding! I pride myself in the fact that ALL my students that started with "package" or "trial" lessons renewed! Their goals are my goals and we work together to achieve them at a pace I can assess by their progress. Again, I don't teach music, I teach how to play the instrument, big difference, greater results! Read More

I have been teaching since I was 12. My parents' friends would ask me to teach them guitar! My degrees are in Theater, Music and English, and my Master's in Education from Harvard University taught me that everyone learns differently. I had the opportunity to study with Professor Howard Gardner, who developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences. Some of us learn visually. Others are far more tactile. And then there are students who hear and play by ear. Read More

I have been teaching private performance lessons since I was 14 and later taught guitar through both of my respective colleges as a graduate assistant. Immediately upon graduating, I was hired on as an Adjunct Faculty Professor at the California Institute of the Arts to teach secondary guitar lessons. I was very proud to say that I was the youngest member of the faculty at that time and I held the position for 3 semesters before leaving to tour for a year. Read More

The best plan is to always make room for fun as much as possible, because the harsh reality of practice can be a downer. I emphasize learning with the interest of the student in mind. It is best to be enthusiastic, but I make sure to see where the energy level of the student is to term the approach for the session. I give helpful reminders of learning techniques to stay motivated in between lessons. Read More
