Learning how to play an instrument, how to read music, and the three Ts can be overwhelming, to say the least! My job is to coach students as they become familiar with the hows and whys of their new or familiar instrument. The most thorough knowledge comes from a self-motivated sense of wonder and drive for exploration. With me as your guide, you can discover all that your instrument and its music has to offer! For all students, regardless of age or skill level, I like to gauge their musical interests (i.e., what music they listen to, what inspired them to pick up the guitar, etc.), and then work from there. For someone who has never picked up an instrument before, I generally work out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1. Once we're past that, I'll start showing them some basic songs, as well as seeing what kinds of songs they would be interested in learning. Read More

For beginning students, I typically begin with a deep dive on rudimental studies and keyboard skills on drums and mallet percussion. I gradually introduce notation and music literacy tools to improve the students understanding of how the fundamentals of music interact with one another. I use a lot of rote teaching methods as well to take full advantage of how physical percussion and drums can be. I find that students interests will quickly guide me to making suggestions for different repertoire to take on as the student is ready. Read More

My teaching style is by assigning studies and etudes to develop fundamentals while simultaneously incorporating the learnt fundamentals into “real-time”, on the job training! I have learned all of my most valuable lessons while performing and being put on the spot; I will teach my students how to be prepared for any situation, not only in regard to music but also in relation to life, by having a calm and steady approach to the task at hand! Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice
All students come with different strengths and weaknesses so I decided what needs to be done after hearing them. Basic technique is very important to consistently sing in any style. A singer must have stable, and consistent breathing as well as proper vocal balance. I have a substantial number of excursuses to begin training these aspects with a singer at any level. I structure the first part of a lesson as technical work and the second half as repertoire. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Set a specific time every day/week. Make sure the student eats a hour before the lesson. Put on your mind to "receive" mode and that there aren't any distractions in the room. If a section of a piece is problematic that we would work on that part first. A metronome can be helpful at first when practicing. If possible, internally sing the piece down and up again. The instructor can play one hand while the student plays the other. There are also pieces for 2 pianos. Practicing doesn't have to be boring at all. it can be a creator of fun, drama, adventure...
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child has a great deal of energy and it is focused on inner thought,
If the child has a little energy and it is focused on outer thought.
If the child can sign-a-long from DVD tracks, or if the child can dance to a children show, they are ready for lessons.
If the students stop crying when music is being played.
If the students bang on kitchen utensils.
they are ready for lessons.
If the student asks the family for piano at home,
they are ready for lessons.
If the student starts playing what he hears on the radio,
they are ready for lessons.
When will I start to see results?
A parent of slower IQ will find themselves seeing results in either a month or less.
A parent of medium IQ will take 2-3 weeks, while advanced students for 1-2 weeks.
This isn't set in stone, some of their grades fluctuate from (ex. third to second) and some rearrangement will probably occur. But by the end of the course all grades should normalize.
It is important that the children wants to be here, but excessive crying (for youngest class) lesson after lesson indicates a problem. I would gently ask the child "whats wrong", or "is the music giving you a problem?". Sometimes the personal touch can help students with bad attitude.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
When I was just starting my undergraduate I was very impressed by Charles Wuorinen, Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur award winner. He taught for New Jersey and commuted to New York if there was an engagement (he also has a home on West End Avenue).
Wuorinen's music is daring and electrifying to the listener. It also has moments of eerie calm where the instruments can stretch out and blend together. His pieces tend to be large with well-defined sections.
He also takes the older composer (Machaut) and arranged it in his style. Similar pieces are over his output.
