Professional but fun. First we review the last couple of lessons, and then we do new- building upon what we have done earlier. Each student is unique, and I teach to them individually. I call it my Individual Music Program! I really get a kick out of seeing my students learn and progress along the musical staff, as the month go on., Often times I will get a brother and sister for lessons teaching them to play music together and become comfortable performing for family members and the public. Music brings me a lot of joy, and I hope to impart that to my students! It takes time and effort to gain mastery of an instrument, but the resulting freedom and fulfillment of being able to play and enjoy music are more than worth it. It was during high school that I started to teach piano, and my love for teaching music has only grown since then. I love teaching students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Read More

With any student who is in a beginning sort of stage with their musicality, I will start off by teaching them basic techniques, simple notes or chords(dependent on the type of instrument), and rudimentary knowledge of the notational system. Once they have started to make some progress, I take a unique approach by asking them of their own opinion for where they would want to see themselves go. I do this to not only make it as exciting as possible for the student, but to help them achieve a vision they already have for themselves. Read More

I use various methods and books depending on the style, age, ability etc. I always keep my eye out for new books and open to suggestions. A few examples. With classical guitar students who are over 10 yo I prefer to use Christopher Parkening Guitar Method and Frederick Noad "Solo Guitar Playing" The latter suits more mature (both mentally and physically) students. With younger guitar students , 6-9 yo, I usually start by using basic guitar methods such as Hal Leonard Essential elements or "Everybody's Guitar Method" and my own easy arrangements of popular songs before shifting to Parkening. For the beginner we start of with fundamental chord and note structure but I feel it is important to progress into applying these fundamentals to actually playing music as quickly as possible. Over the first few lessons I will learn what types of music the student is most interested in and will blend the lessons to include both what the student wants to learn with what the student needs to learn to become well rounded guitar player and musician. Every student progresses at their own pace. I write out the homework for the week on a piece of paper for both them and the parent to see. When their expectations are written out, it's easier to see how far they've progressed. Most of my lessons start out with asking how their week went and how much practice they were able to get in. We then review the material from the week before and talk about the progress or any difficulties they may have come across during the week. Read More

I have considerable experience teaching music and first started giving private lessons in the early 2000s while completing my bachelors degree in guitar performance. As I went on to graduate school and then ultimately to complete my Ph.D. in musicology, I continued to teach privately that whole time while also teaching lecture courses at local colleges.
