Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. In my opinion a big part of playing music is being creative, and a big part of being creative is having fun. When teaching I always make sure there is a positive environment that encourages learning and growth. I have found the best way for a student to learn and improve is by having so much fun playing that they can't put the instrument down. Every student is different, so the first thing I like to do is get to know them as a musician, where they are on their instrument, and what they wish to accomplish in lessons. I want to keep the student comfortable with what they are working on and at the same time find ways to go beyond the comfort zone. I approach teaching with patience. When a student learns concepts and techniques for the first time, it might take a while to really get it down. By having a patient and calm aura, it helps the student to not get frustrated. In addition, each student learns at their own pace. Some might get it quicker that others and that's fine. I use a combination of my own teaching curriculum, Hal Leanoards Method books, which are full of modern riffs by some of today's top Rock and Pop artists, Troy Stetina methods for my Hard Rock/Metal students, Musicians Institute materials, Guitar for Kids for the younger ones etc... While I draw from a variety of material the lessons are very focused. I learn what each students goals are along with how they best learn and we formulate a solid plan of attack. Read More
