Depending on the age and personality, I cater each lesson to the individual. If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary. I'm an Austin, TX-born and based composer and multi-instrumentalist. Initially self-taught, I went on to study guitar with John Dearman (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet), Molly Miller (Jason Mraz, Black Eyed Peas), Thomas Echols, Dragos Ilie (Austin Guitar Quartet), and Adam Holzman at The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin where I earned my BM. I am fluent in styles ranging from classical, jazz, and rock. Read More

Around this time, I also began taking students for private lessons on violin, guitar, mandolin, banjo and all the other various things I play. In both the bigger theory classes and my one-on-one lessons, I really encourage students to work on material that they enjoy and to relate their studies to the things that they're passionate about. I want to ensure that my students are as excited about music as I am! Read More

Most of my education and experience working with students comes from a background of counseling and social sciences. I try to approach teaching music and guitar in a similar way to how I would approach any other kind of teaching, and attribute my unique background and skillset to make my lessons effective for a diverse range of students. Sometimes it may take me more time than is provided within one lesson to, for example, listen to and figure out how to play and teach a song that is new to me to a student is interested in learning it, so patience is appreciated. While I do teach students to read music and teach the theory behind tunes and compositions that we learn, I think that the MOST important element in anyone's pursuit of musical proficiency lay in the ability to connect what one hears to what one plays. Ear training therefore is a large component. I do use the time honored texts by Hal Leonard and Alfred publications or some from Mel Bay and those from Jay Traylor as well as many others such as the Real Book and Greg Fishman texts. Read More

My approach to teaching is based on the goals of each individual student. I always ask the student what their skill level is and what their goals are, and I use that information to create the right lesson for each individual. I also always encourage students to be honest about what they like and don't like about the lessons, and I am never bothered if a student doesn't like something or wants to do things differently. I do my best to keep things fun and relaxed. Music should be a joy, not a chore. Guitar does require hard work though, and I expect my students to practice and show me their progress each week. I usually try to give all my students a basic understanding of music theory and to get them started reading music, even if they are mainly interested in rock or pop music. Read More
