When I think about a student learning wintry to put myself in there shoes. They want to feel like they have something to show for the time that they were the class session. . if we have an hour session and at the end of the session they can go out and show off what they learned then they will. For me, it is easier for me to hear a rhythm or melody while looking at it. It is easier for me to grasp and understand the rhythm and melody in terms of the context of the piece. Same with my teaching. I will always demonstrate a scale or rhythm or chord for a student before having the student attempt it by themselves. After we work through the example together, I will have them try playing it alone and if a particular area needs to be fixed I will address it, make sure the student understands, and move on from there. I first find out a little bit about my students musical likes and taste, or, with younger students, find somethingfun that interests them, just to find some common ground. I also find out a students long term goals. For instance, if a student seeks to be a opera singer as opposed to a worship leader, the training needs to be more pointed towards classical pieces and Arias instead of learning church music and how to engage a crowd. I have been playing guitar for over 40 years. I am well versed in mant different styles and techniques. I believe that playing guitar is an ongoing, never-ending learning experience. I have learned many things from playing with other musicians either with a band or when just jamming with other guitarists. I am about 95% self-taught. Except for occasional tips from others, I have never had any formal music lessons. I started playing guitar at age 12. I'm now 67 so I have been playing over 50 years. Nevertheless, I am still trying to improve my playing and learn more about music theory and guitar playing. I use the "CAGED" system on guitar as a way to navigate the fretboard and understand the patterns on Guitar. I always put a strong emphasis on being able to learn a song by ear and understand the theory behind it. For younger children I use the Hal Leonard Method book to give them the ability to read Music.
