For younger students I like to start at the beginning; how to properly hold the instrument, how to tune the instrument, the layout of the fretboard (scales), a healthy repertoire of level appropriate music, etc. As students advance, however, I will introduce Theoretical concepts (Ear Training, Harmony, Modes, etc.) and a more detailed repertoire of music that the student is fervent about learning. I like to encourage my students to compose pieces, and write songs. Read More

I enjoy sharing my musical knowledge to students so they will advance in their musical aims. In 1983, I attended The Guitar Institute of Technology and studied privately with Frank Gambale, who formalized the single line "sweep technique" on guitar. While in L.A. I also studied with Ed Mann, longtime Frank Zappa percussionist and teacher at Cal. Arts. In Boston, I became assistant to George Russell on the revision of his 1953 copyrighted and published book "The Lydian Chromatic Concept Of Tonal Organization" released in 2001. Read More

My main objective is to steer the pupil towards a place of autonomy so they are able to solve music related problems on their own and develop the intrinsic ability already present within themselves. It is important to be able to read music, notes and rhythms etc., due to the innumberable and undeniable advantages to being musically literate (this of course extends to, depending on the level of the student, music history and theory as well). The first lesson will be as much a conversation as an applied lesson, functioning as a way to get a sense of the student's interests, experience-level, and personality. I ask that for the first lesson, the student bring in a recording of something they'd like to learn in the near future - or, if they have a longer-term sense of what they'd like to do, two recordings, one of which they would like to learn in the near future, and another of which they'd like to work towards learning as a longer-term goal. Depending on the level of the student and what they are looking to achieve through the lessons I would use a few different methods. I like to use guitar books if at all possible for beginners because its a great place to start. The fundamentals are where you have to start to build a scaffolding and practice books are great for doing this. I also like to use songs and tunes as a way of teaching different concepts. Read More

I believe that patience is key when teaching music. Every student is different and it is my job as an instructor to tailor my lessons to each individual. Music has changed and enriched my life in so many ways that I love to give back and share this joy with others. I believe that by instilling a passion for music in students they will come to appreciate all art forms. Read More

I have been playing music for over 30 years, starting with the drums at age 12, and then guitar at age 14. I attended Berklee College of Music and graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Professional Music in 1995. My main areas of focus while in college was jazz composition and performance. I have been teaching professionally since 1996, and have since picked up other instruments such as bass, piano, and alto sax. Read More
