I began singing solos in church when I was 6 years old. I picked up the guitar when I was 10. At Montevallo, my primary instrument was voice and piano was my secondary instrument. I've been teaching professionally since 1981 -- 37 years as of this writing. My students have gone on to be professionals themseleves, but many of them just enriched their lives with music. As a performer, I've sung and played guitar in churches, clubs, local television and at weddings, funerals and I've perfomed in musicals alongside Broadway star Rebecca Luker in college. Read More

If students are beginners, I generally use the Alfred Lesson books which are made for children and adults. These include theory books which I love to teach! Knowing the music theory behind what you're playing is so important and helps the music make much more sense. As a student progresses, I like to have them choose a piece out of selected repertoire so that they may have a say in what they're learning, and so that they will enjoy it all the more. Read More

I've found that with any instrument, its important to pick music that stretches you, but also music that the student likes or loves to keep them interested and engaged. It can sometimes be hard work, so it's important that the result is you either accomplishing a goal and that could be in technic or learning a song that you love. Even if the student wants to work on improve, we can figure out a song that they enjoy, or have wanted to play along with for a long time, and we can build a track of that song for them to practice too. For beginners, I usually start with teaching you basic technique on the instrument. For example, how to hold the instrument, notes on the fretboard, how to count and play at the same time, etc. Once the student progresses, I begin to teach you more intermediate techniques, music theory, ear training, and learning songs. For advanced students, I try and give more in-depth material to be able to play the music that you love to play. Read More

To me, the most important part of music is listening. For my beginners, what chord is happening is this song? How do I play that chord? How do I remember all the chords to this song? I will encourage my more advanced students to listen to the masters, as well as their own playing. What is the master player doing in this recording? How can the student apply that same concept in their own playing? Read More
